About Erzulie Dantor
Erzulie Dantor is the fierce and protective mother of Haiti, a central lwa of the Petwo rite. Known under many spellings — Ezili Dantor, Erzulie Danto, Ezili Dantò, Metres Dantor — she embodies righteous rage, sacrifice, protection, and uncompromising love for her children.
Her historical presence is tied to the ceremony of Bwa Kayiman on August 14, 1791, presided over by Dutty Boukman and Cecile Fatiman, a night that ignited the Haitian Revolution. Dantor is honored as a mother who fought to bring a nation into being. She is the flame behind revolt, the iron will of Haitian resistance, the guardian spirit who protects the vulnerable and defends with blades, fire, and ferocity.
She is often represented through imagery of the Black Madonna, scarred cheeks (twa mak), and the weapons she carries. Some call her the Queen of Haiti, a lwa of sacrifice, survival, and unstoppable strength.
